I like the vibrant colors and the shape of the legs the most.

Starmilkplus responds:

Thank you! A year has passed since I made this one, and I can definitely see some things I'd like to do better, especially the rushed servbots. Glad you appreciate the legs and colors alot though! 👌Thank you!

I honestly love the stylized look for the face and the flow of the clothing. I also love the red that pops out in the shadows. If you wouldn't mind going into your coloring technique that would be great!

rtil responds:

i always start with the shadow colors first and block out the light later. once it's in a place i like, i pick a saturated bright swatch of the skin and go over the edges lightly to get that effect on the midtone. it's especially good on characters with more refined areas like muscle, so it fits on Bea pretty well.

The double rim lighting really brings more interest to this. If you don't mind me, where do you do blending and where do you keep the hard edges?

MollySkyfire responds:

Hey thanks!! I absolutely love the multi-directional lighting found in glamor photography, so I'm trying my best to learn!

As to edges - in any rendering, you've got to consider three kinds of edge - hard, soft, and lost. It's all about what direction the light is coming from, how bright it is, and what the shape of the surface it lands on is. A gradual slope or curve will usually mean a lost or soft edge, whereas a crisp corner or a cast shadow tends to create hard edges. Rim light tends to be a little crisper because it's usually cast from a bit behind the figure and very bright, so we only see the terminator of that cast light.

That said, I am still an intermediate at best with rendering and light, so I encourage you to look up tutorials on YouTube or grab some books on the matter (Color and Light by Gurney is a very good book).

I honestly think the original looks good. It's more of a style preference for me since the execution is great on both ends.

Ehhhh. I don't want to be too negative, but the way you drew his face simply doesn't fit him. You took away his inner badassery by making his face a little too long and triangular looking. Also the actual anatomy is too bony for someone of Monkey D. Luffy, AKA Straw Hat Luffy, AKA The Fifth Emperor, AKA The Next King of the Pirates. In fact this is a disappoint for a Luffy fanart. One Piece is the greatest fictional work in existence. Luffy is the greatest and most badass fictional concept to ever become a human thought so I expect way better.

Great use of foreshortening on the left leg. I'm honestly wondering how you pulled that off.

I'm loving the attention to detail with the muscles on the arms. My suggestions would be to try out some more dynamic lighting (for example, maybe add more vibrant light around the fist and add some bright spots of light where appropriate), and create some more sharpness in terms of the shape of the clothing.

I like the coloring, especially of the skin and the hair and I'm wondering how you pull this off.

I'm honestly wondering how you pull off this retro style of yours.

I'm glad that you are back. As for the piece itself I like the subtle blue within the skin. For a general suggestion the only thing that comes to mind is maybe adding more red within the skin and bounce light that would reflect off of the other objects (skateboard, brackelet, tail, etc.).

However to be honest the coloring doesn't look bad. I'm just suggesting an area of possible experimentation for the future.

I am an adult male human who will create an anime/manga that will surpass the greatest fictional work in existence, One Piece.
